The Fastest 2/2

"Come on now, settle." This was going to come to blows, and Kakashi would lay Shisui out. Minato did not want to listen to that lecture from Fugaku. They needed the Uchiha for the war. They didn't need to alienate them by beating up their kids.

Itachi suddenly smacked into Shisui's middle, his little arms wrapping around Shisui's stomach. He peered up at Shisui, little bell jingling. Shisui looked down, placing his hands over Itachi's in an automatic gesture. Kakashi paused. Even he would think twice about striking when such a small child was in the way. Shisui sighed.

"Fine, fine....I'm sorry, Kakashi-san. I bet you're an awesome jounin and could kick mu butt." Shisui didn't look very apologetic. "But I'm still the fastest."

"You can't be. Everyone knows that Sensei is." Kakashi crossed his arms, trying, Minato knew, to portray the calm dismissal of an adult to a child. He wasn't getting it, but Minato would applaud him for trying to be adult when he wanted to thump Shisui on the head.

Minato clapped his hands sharply before the debate could start again. Everyone jumped, his team turned to him. Itachi buried his face in Shisui's stomach, and Shisui clutched Itachi's head, giving Minato a terrified look for just that crucial instant before he smoothed it out and was simply attentive. War kids.

"How about we settle this once and for all?" Minato suggested. "With a race."

"Yeah." Shisui nodded, grinning again. He peeled Itachi off of himself, only succeeding in reducing Itachi's hold to
something one handed. "I always win races--even with the older kids." Shisui tried again to get Itachi's off. "Tachi, get off, limpet. I gotta race."

Obito came to the rescue, scooping Itachi off the ground completely. Minato heard the little snap of Shisui's shirt being yanked from Itachi's iron grip. He smiled as Obito moved to stand near Rin, who was more interested in fussing over Itachi than in the dramatic declaration that a race was going to happen. Obito was most interested in getting Rin’s attention with Itachi. Kakashi....he looked far less than impressed. Far far less.

"Sensei, I don't see the point. We need to be training." Shisui stuck his tongue out at the back of Kakashi's head. Minato had to smother a chuckle. He liked Uchiha when they were little much better than the bigger ones.

"It will only take a second, Kakashi-kun. Besides, if we never spend any time in the village we're protecting, what's the point?" Minato looked around for good markers. "How about we race from here to that really big tree with the funny crook?"

"That one?" Shisui pointed, his face skeptical. It was a long distance. Minato realized he probably should have picked something closer. How old was Shisui anyway? Eight? Nine? Shisui suddenly nodded. "Okay, that one. You ready? Who's gonna say go?"

"Rin will. She's impartial." Minato glanced to the girl. Shisui nodded, approving the girl as the starter. Rin was now holding Itachi, who had been seduced by a lollipop. She had been paying attention, though. Rin nodded, propping Itachi on her hip and leaning her head on his head.

"I'll count to three and yell go, okay?" Rin moved to stand beside them, and drew a long line in the dirt. Shisui shuffled his feet up to the line and looked at the tree again. Minato could see the doubt in his young face. Shisui glanced at Kakashi, who watched with lazy skepticism. Shisui scowled and looked back to the tree, determined.

"Ready?" Rin bounced Itachi on her hip, Itachi blinked his large grey eyes, staring with fixed adoration at his cousin. "One..." Shisui bristled with anticipation. Every muscle in his young body taut. "Two..." Minato stood at ease, watching the child beside him rather than the tree where Shisui was fixed. "Three...." How young was this little one, already flecked with bruises and scars? Already the fastest? "GO!"

Shisui went--lightning fast, amazing for something his size. Minato had no intention of using a technique against this child, but he started a second later. a Second was a long time with Shisui. Shisui, this child. This tiny, tiny child....

The Fastest FINAL

Minato's hand hit the tree seconds before Shisui's. Shisui stopped, panted and sweating, His limbs shook. He looked at the tree. He looked at Minato.

"Oh." Shisui looked again like this was a puzzle he needed to figure out. "I almost beat you."

Minato could hear, even from this far away, Kakashi's scoff. Minato smiled. "Yes. Almost."

"Next time, I will," Shisui promised, crossing his arms and nodding.

"I look forward to that, Shisui."

Itachi had wriggled from Rin grip and came up as fast as his five year-old legs could carry him. He tackled Shisui--weak kneed--almost over before Minato steadied him. Itachi looked up at Shisui, eye bright and flashing, his lips pulled into a crooked little smile that showed missing teeth.

Shisui laughed. "All that matters is I'm still faster than you! That's all you need to worry about, brat!" Itachi glanced
at Minato and, Minato felt like those eye said more than they should, and that by looking at him, Itachi was sharing a secret with Minato. Minato glanced at Shisui and found the boy looking straight at him. Shisui smirked--knowing.

Then he cackled like a child and fell over trying to pick Itachi up.
Minato watched as Obito dragged his cousin's back home. Rin was carrying Itachi, feeding him yet more sugar, Obito was fair bursting with pride that Rin was walking home with him.

"He wasn't anywhere close to beating you." Kakashi pointed out as they walked home together.

"No, not really," Minato smiled. "That kid, Kakashi-kun, that kid is going to be special. He's going to be the fastest one day."

Kakashi turned and looked after Shisui. "Really?" He sounded doubtful.

"Yes," Minato smiled. "I'm going to look forward to our next race--and the one where he finally beats me even more."

not OP

So cute! I love how paternal Minato is here and how adorable the kids (Shisui, Itachi, and Minato's genin team) are.

OP here!
